My modem worked fined until a few days ago. Now when I try to connect I get error 680 no dial tone. My phone is working fine and my ISP numbers are working fine. I have not made any changes to the drivers or anything. I have checked the connection and my query modem utility comes back fine. Can anyone help me?

Do you have voice mail on this line? Check the phone line in back of the modem to be connected. What OS are you using. Post a modem log please. If you have a phone plug into the modem remove and try again. Can you hear the modem dialing?

No voice mail is on the line. I have checked the phone line and I have used two different ones. I get the same result. The modem is trying to connect but it can not and as a result I receive the 680 error. I am running Windows XP. Here is a copy of the modem log.

Do you have SP2 installed?
Open your Control Panel, then Double click the Phone and Modem Options icon. click onto the Modems tab at the top, highlight your modem, and click the Properties button. Click onto the Modem tab, then uncheck the Wait for dial tone before dialing option. click OK on each of the open windows to save your changes.Might also add X3 to extra settings. Are you using a surge device?Do you know how to use hyper terminal?
http://help.expedient.com/dialup/hyperterminal.shtml

Go down to How to use ATi commands in Hyper terminal

type AT click enter
type AT&f click enter
type in ATDTXXXXXXX XXXXXX would be the isp number click enter should connect.

Also check that your modem is listed in the connect using window. Are you using juno or aol?

I will have to respond when I get home and check my laptop. I didn't bring it to work with me. I will do what you suggested and let you know. I found new drivers for the modem. Do you think this would cause it not to work?

Did this problem start after new driver installed? If so might remove the dial up connectoid in the dial up folder and make a new one.Is this a name brand pc like dell? Use x1 in extra settings to blind dial.

If still having problems run ptuninst.exe, make sure no modems listed in device manager. reinstall modem with new drivers.

I have not updated my drivers yet. The problem just started and I have not made any changes. I was just wondering if you thought it would work or not. I will do what you first suggested before updating the drivers.

If there is a updated driver for this modem from the vendors website I would update the driver also.

Here is the response from your suggestions/questions.
I am not running service pack 2 of XP(although I get automatic windows update).
I created a hyperterminal connection and I got an error. I don't recall what it was but I could not connect. I am using Everyone's Internet as my ISP provider. I don't know where to go to add X3 for extra settings can you tell me where to go to do this. I did not install the latest drivers yer, because I wanted to test this first. I did uncheck waiting for dial tone in my modem properties and still no connection.

Any other suggestions?

Try the number to the isp with your phone, you should hear modem sounds.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326681&Product=winxp
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/duns680.asp
The page above should help with this problem. If you can not connect to isp in hyperterminal than this is a modem install or modem problem.Would like to know the error you were getting in hyperterminal. What is the make and model of this pc? Check if you have any program ruuning in the background that is using the modem like fax software.
If this is a lap top try connection with out the power adapter connect. If none of the above helps I would install updated drivers.

I dont recall the specific error it was "NO something" I think it was dial tone. I have a dell laptop 2600 Inspiron. It is two years old and I never had any problems with it. I have tried to connect without it being plugged into the outlet and I got the same results. I will try installing the drivers and I will let you know how I come out. Thanks.

I wanted to thank you for all your help. It happen to be the pins inside the modem port on my laptop. They were bent and as a result I was not able to get a dial tone.
