I have the modemsite Agere DSP modem with the 8.30 drivers.
Is this a voice modem? It lists only data/fax in the modem information but it lists voice on the website. If so, are there any good free or nearly free software to use?

The 'voice' part of the modem is 'answering machine' type function.
Personally, I don't recommend using it for voice;
I have rec'd feedback from some who do use it for answering machine & say they get very good audio.
The Bitfax software supplied with the modem should provide basic voice & fax functionality.
Other software - TAPI compliant should work; but, if you're looking for callerid info as part of the voice features (I saw that in another post you made), this isn't the modem as it doesn't support type1 caller id....

Aloha! Richard.

Modems that have solid-state DAA will provide type 1 caller id; however, in my opinion, they are less reliable; in addition, sound-quality of a voice mode, may or may not be acceptable - and more than just the modem is factor in sound-quality issue - so I try not to recommend any of this category modem....
If I had to do this, my first choice would be to try an Agere Softmodem

Would you believe that is the modem I replaced?
A Lectron I56LVP-F50
With Agere Chipset SV92P-T00
I wasn't getting Type 1 Caller ID with that one either.
Maybe I'll put it back to confirm.

Will -
The F-50 has the electro-mechanical DAA so does not support type 1 caller id.
The F-70 has the solid-state DAA.
Both are softmodem SVP - the difference being the codec/DAA.

Aloha! Richard.

Know of any place I can get the F70?

I'm not using it for connecting to the internet.
I have a cable modem for that. So as far as reliable do you mean stops working or less reliable connections or more DOA products?

I do not know for sure where you might buy - perhaps try search with I56LVP-F70 on Google or other search engine...

Reliability - I think more DOA product and more likely to fail, especially if there's nearby thunderstorm - the best way to protect against latter is to unplug the line cord from modem if there's going to be a storm....

Aloha! Richard.
