I disabled V.90 on my Courier Internal modem last night using the command S58.5=1. I was surprised to see that the modem connected with x2.

That raises the question as to how the two compare.

Has anyone had better results by any chance with x2?

Since I am getting inconsistent results with V.90, I guess this is worth trying for a while. As with everything else, it is probably a function of many variables including the modem at the other end.

Thanks, Kent

x2 is much worse than V.90.
It may tell you it's connecting at a better speed, but if it does tell you so, it's not telling the truth....

I'm curious - are ISPs and the modems they use still supporting both of the earlier 56K standards along with V.90? Most people should have upgraded to V.90, but I'm sure there are some who have not.

Thanks, Kent

Nearly every ISP has upgraded to V.90; the V.90 code for any particular access server brand will support V.90 AND K56Flex OR V.90 AND x2. (Licensing arrangements prevent a server modem from supporting x2 and k56flex.)

x2 will definitely outperfom v.90 in some situations. Specifically, the x2 modems do a better job of compensating for some values of digital loss inserted in the connection at the telco central office.

I routinely connect at 49,333 and maintain download rates up to 5 kbytes per second. The connection has 3 dB digital loss.

v.90 modems will work, but a decent connection is achieved rarely.
