I'm currently doing some research for a voicemail application I am building, and I'm trying to figure out how many internal voice modems (dialup, v.253 compliant) have been sold over the past 5-7 years, and what the current mix is (voice modems to data-only dial up modems); ultimately, my interest is in understanding approximately what percent of the installed PC base worldwide is v.253 compliant. I've seen some numbers on total analog modems sold as high as 86M units in 2001 (which sounds high to me), to somewhere around 1.5-2M units sold in 2003, but I haven't seen any breakout on voice modems anywhere. Any thoughts/info would be greatly appreciated! Like I mentioned, this is for a new voicemail application I am working on, which is really applicable only to PC internal modems (2 RJ11 ports; not applicable to laptops), and focused primarily at developing country markets (so any regional data/trends would be greatly appreciated as well).

Thanks in advance!

The vast majority of modems being sold are 'voice' modems, although I can't help you with exact numbers. Not all 'voice' modems are V.253 compliant, however. The manner in which modems with 2 rj-11 jacks work also varies: some disconnect the 'phone' jack when the modem is off-hook; some do not.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks Richard. Good info. I came up with another question since I posted this today, and would be curious for your thoughts/knowledge as well: of the voice modems sold, how many are VTR capable (full duplex voice)? (most, some, few, etc?) -Maybe this is a subset of the v.253 modems?

Thanks again.
