CONTEXT: I have ancient celeron 433mhz win98 laptop that had lucent winmodem working. hadnt used for a few months, and (unfortunately) tried plugging in an USB drive when I powered it on. the driver was not detected for USB drive. when I tried to connect via modem, it want working!

MESSAGE: "Error 630: The computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in, and if necessary, turn the modem off, and then turn it back on"

Questions:
1. can the modem h/w go bad physically? I presume it is on the motherboard itself! how do I cross check whether its ok in hardware terms? booted in safe mode, tried echoing some string (from MS help pages) to com1 - failed. echo to com2 succeeded.

2. my understanding is that this is a softmodem, so it wont be detected by OS. I have to add it manually. (removed, added - did not make a difference)

3.seems trying USB on win98 may cause some conflict. turned off "accessibility" for serial devices to eliminate USB confusion. didn't help. any ideas?

4. how do I know which port has to be associated with modem? COM1 or COM2 or whatever. my laptop has one parallel, one modem, USB, IR. I havent used any of these but I presume that (except for USB) none of them really use COM that may cause conflict.

sorry for long post, but trying to add as many details that may help this weird situation :(

thanks
shailesh

The modem cannot be installed with Windows/ Add New Hardware.
The modem must be installed using the appropriate driver package which has a setup program.
If it is a Lucent Win Modem, you'll need the driver from
www.modemsite.com/56k/ltwin7.asp

Before you do anything, check the ControlPanel/System->Hardware Device Manager -
are any modems listed/ any unknown devices?

Aloha! Richard.

1. downloaded generic agere driver, ran setup.exe, finished without error.

2. Control Panel -> Modem -> shows COM1 Agere WinModem. Diagnostic-> "modem fails to respond, either not turned on, or if internal. check interrupt for conflicts"

3. Information comes up Port: COM1, Interrupt: 04, Address: 3F8, UART: NS16550AN, Identifier: UNIMODEM4367D0C2

4. checked System->Devices-> no conflicts, modem listed. driver info correctly displayed as Agere.

Has my modem really gone bad (as in hardware fault)? am I using right COM port, right interrupt?

Please helpppppppppppppp ...

The modem you have listed is not installed correctly.
The modem cannot use a built-in COM port which is what your info shows - that would occur if you add modem using Add New Hardware Wizard - the modem will not work that way.
You'll need to:
Uninstall the modem.
Run
ltremove.exe
which comes with the downloaded driver - included in the extracted file from the download

then, run setup.exe

Aloha! Richard.
