Hello there!

I have a Motorola SM56 PCI Speakerphone modem. My problem is: my PC encounters errors, or crashes, or suddenly shuts down on it own while I'm connected to my ISP's digital dialup lines between 44K to 46K. I don't experience any of them with my ISP's analog dialup lines. What is causing them? Does it have something to do with my modem lacking a DSP? What can I do to resolve them?

My OS by the way is Windows 98SE. And here are the usual error notices that pops up, as well as the corresponding error alert I recieved when I tried to redial:

quote:
"An exception 00 has occurred at 0028:D579B317 in VxD ---. This was called from 0028:C0003A7F in VxD ---. It may be possible to continue normally."

quote:
"A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0167:BFF24DDS. The current application will be terminated."

quote:
"The modem is not responding properly. Please verify that the modem is plugged in to the computer and to the telephone line. If the problem persists, please select 'More Help' button to start the Windows 98 Modem Troubleshooter."

Any help will be highly appreciated. Thank you!

If this modem has worked "previously" (without problems) with its current driver your computer is most likely infected with adware, spyware, frostware or malware.
Start with Ad-Aware

Spybot-S&D (Search&Distroy)

Always run a firewall;

Thanks for your suggestion Pi. I have Search&Destroy, and I always run my firewall while I'm online.

I don't encounter those problems when I'm using my ISP's analog dialup lines. The only catch is that they are so slow compared to a digital one, so I have to use the latter. I'm thinking that my problem maybe caused by other reasons than what you have already enumerated. It could be the SM56's lack of DSP or something else. I mean; it works with analog lines but not on digital. So that must be the reason or maybe something relating to it. Any more ideas?

Thanks again for registering your reply. I really appreciate it a lot.

IS there a file listed after "in VXD --"

P/S
Your question "could be the SM56's lack of DSP or something else".
Software modems run all modem functions in memory, modem control and data pump.
Any "bad code" that can cause these errors or crash your system can crash your modem processes also.

Running a hardware based modem (dedicated DSP) might keep you on line but some piece of bad code is having its way with your system.

Does this only happen with IE browser. Have you tried running without Active X (turned off)?

Is you system and IE browser up to date, patched?

Have you tried a different modem driver?

By digital line I have assumed you mean a V.90 or V.92 connection and by analog you mean forcing a V.34 connection. ?
