| Casperian Tl Posts: 5 Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) | Posted - 11/25/2004 9:56:17 AM    Hi I really need some help. I have just purchased a modem (although I have had this problem with other modems). When I connect to the net, sometimes the speed initially is fine. Sometimes however, the "RD" (receive data) light on my modem "shakes". In other words, it has like this fine flicker to it. When this happens I get terrible speeds. If I disconnect, and reconnect (sometimes it tales up to TEN tries to get a decent connection)! Either way, after a few minutes up to a few hours, the RD light will anyway begin to flicker and get terrible speeds again. Also this disconnection and numerous reconnection attempts again works. I just found the modem log and I found that on the last connection, when that happened, it said that "The DTR speed was lowered" Is this the cause of the problem? Also what causes the DTR speed to be lowered and what can I do to correct this problem? It is driving me mad!!! Many thanks |
| v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 11/25/2004 6:07:35 PM  Based upon the info you've provided so far, my guesses include a phone line quality problem (how do voice calls sound? are they clear? and noise/clicks/pops?); make sure the modem settings include error correction and compression. What speed do you connect at? If it's a 56k modem and you have marginal phone line, you may do better by disabling 56k and/or limiting connect speed. Better diagnostic info may be available from the modem's diagnostics Would like you to post the post-call diagnostics and your modem log.

My phone line seems ok - although it is my guess as well that something is up with the phone company. I will call them on monday and ask them to test that out. I have checked my modem log again and there is nothing that has appeared again, like the thing I posted before. I am also not sure what chipset the darn modem is - as it is a local branded modem. Could there possibly be any command in hyper terminal that I can use to tell the modem to ignore any noises, or anything else that could slow it down, and just keep the speed irrespective? The usual one is however 45.2. I have tried to disable error correction, but then when the modem says verifying username and password it jams and will not proceed at all. I will post the results from hyperterminal next time I am online. Thanks again so much for the help. |
