Casperian Tl Posts: 5 Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) | Posted - 11/25/2004 9:56:17 AM Hi I really need some help. I have just purchased a modem (although I have had this problem with other modems). When I connect to the net, sometimes the speed initially is fine. Sometimes however, the "RD" (receive data) light on my modem "shakes". In other words, it has like this fine flicker to it. When this happens I get terrible speeds. If I disconnect, and reconnect (sometimes it tales up to TEN tries to get a decent connection)! Either way, after a few minutes up to a few hours, the RD light will anyway begin to flicker and get terrible speeds again. Also this disconnection and numerous reconnection attempts again works. I just found the modem log and I found that on the last connection, when that happened, it said that "The DTR speed was lowered" Is this the cause of the problem? Also what causes the DTR speed to be lowered and what can I do to correct this problem? It is driving me mad!!! Many thanks |

What speed do you connect at? If it's a 56k modem and you have marginal phone line, you may do better by disabling 56k and/or limiting connect speed. See www.modemsite.com/56k/ms.asp www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-linklimit.asp What kind of modem/chipset is it? Better diagnostic info may be available from the modem's diagnostics Would like you to post the post-call diagnostics and your modem log.

Casperian Tl Posts: 5 Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) | Posted - 11/26/2004 10:12:01 AM Hi Many thanks for your very quick reply. My phone line seems ok - although it is my guess as well that something is up with the phone company. I will call them on monday and ask them to test that out. I have checked my modem log again and there is nothing that has appeared again, like the thing I posted before. I am also not sure what chipset the darn modem is - as it is a local branded modem. Could there possibly be any command in hyper terminal that I can use to tell the modem to ignore any noises, or anything else that could slow it down, and just keep the speed irrespective? Thanks a lot Casperian |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 11/26/2004 1:46:28 PM Use Hyperterminal to retrieve modem responses to ati3 ati5 ati7 ati11 One of thsese may provide clues as to what chipset the modem is. What CONNECT speed to you get when you dial in? Aloha! Richard. |
Casperian Tl Posts: 5 Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) | Posted - 11/26/2004 10:59:32 PM Hi and thanks again for your reply. I get speeds anywhere from 38.6 (only been getting this lately) to 49.2. The usual one is however 45.2. I have tried to disable error correction, but then when the modem says verifying username and password it jams and will not proceed at all. I will post the results from hyperterminal next time I am online. Thanks again so much for the help. |
Casperian Tl Posts: 5 Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) | Posted - 11/27/2004 4:41:34 AM Going to give the telephone company a call on monday and ask them to test the line, and see what they can do. Will post again after that. Thanks very much again! |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 11/27/2004 4:54:58 AM Suggest you try connection with 56k disabled. Command to do this varies depending upon chipset www.modemsite.com/56k/ms.asp Aloha! Richard. |
Casperian Tl Posts: 5 Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) | Posted - 11/28/2004 11:10:51 AM Thanks again for reply. What speeds could I expect to get with the 56k disabled for downloading files? Thanks again |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 11/28/2004 1:40:49 PM The max modem rate with 56k disabled is 33.6kbps. Aloha! Richard. |
