Describe the 'digital line' - ISDN? Provided by your telco? What kind of phones do you connect to the line?

Dial-up modems interface to analog phone line.
They do not work with digital phone lines.

Digital lines may include an adapter to allow analog devices to be connected; however, depending upon the specs of such adapters and the digital line, a modem may or may not work.

Aloha! Richard.
