quietman7 Tl Posts: 6 USA	Posted - 11/28/2004 1:35:49 PM I have been experiencing frequent disconnects from my U.S. Robotics V.92 Fax Win Model 5699B using AOL as an ISP. I have researched this and found in to be a common problem especially for XP users such as myself. Some of the suggestions involve making some changes to the dial up properties in Network Connections. However when I right click AOL in the Dial Up section of Network Connections I get the context menu but when I click on properties in that menu nothing happens. As a result I cannot make any changes. Any idea why I cannot access this? I am the sole user and administrator of this PC.

In any event, what kind of changes were you thinking of making? What I would suggest: Check (post here) your modem's post-call diagnostics after you've been disconnected. You'll need to use Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port to get the diagnostic info. quietman7 Tl Posts: 6 USA	Posted - 11/28/2004 2:07:20 PM I read in one of the postings that the dial up properties has a feature where you can specify the amount of time (20 min., 1 hr., never, etc) before it disconnects. Also isn't this the place to turn Window's firewall on and off? In any event I will work on gathering the modem's post-cal diagnostics and the log to post here later.

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA	Posted - 11/29/2004 3:31:38 PM The modemlog would tend to indicate that you or something on your computer initiated the disconnect. Other software including spyware/malware can do this; if you have more than 1 connectoid and have set software (like e-mail, chat, etc.) to use a different connection than what you are on, running that software can disconnect you. I still would like to see the post-call diagnostics because the modemlog has some stuff in it that's either 'erroneous' or you have other problems - make sure you have modem set for error correction and compression. The problem seemed to start around this time but unfortunately I had just installed XP2. Since it was causing other problems I assumed it was also causing me to loose my Internet connection. I uninstalled SP2 and the problem persisted so I uninstalled and reinstalled the V1.70 USR drivers. The problem remained. I then tried all the following. 2. In Control Panel -> Modem properties -> Advanced Tab ->Advanced Port Settings I pushed both Receive Buffer and Transmit Buffer settings all the way to the right (high). Checkd Use FIFO buffers COM Port Number (COM3) 3. In Control Panel -> Modem properties -> Advanced Tab -> Extra Settings (Extra initialization commands) and I used ATS10=200,S11=55 (ATS10=200 a carrier detect delay command to make it more tolerant of line noise and S11=55 for frequent disconnects) 4. In Control Panel -> Modem properities -> Modem Tab and I already set Maximum Port Speed (COM) to 115200. I'm not sure where the 9600 setting is coming from since it does not show this and I have never used it. 5. Uninstalled QoS Packet Scheduler. 6. Went to AOL system information. - Clicked on Utilities and selected rebuild AOL adapter. - Then cleard the browser cache button. - and deleted all temp internet files and cookies. 7. Used TCPOptimizer for 56K (XP) and used the following settings: MaxMTU - 1500 (my default was 576) TCP Receive Window - 8760 (default 65392) MTU Discovery - Yes (default Yes) Black Hole Detect - No (default N0) Selective ACKs - Yes (default Yes) Max Dup ACKs - 2 (default 2) Time to Live (TTL) - 128 (default 64) TCP 1323 Options - uncheck both boxes (default Windows Scaling checked) Under "Other Settings" tab for IE Optimization: Max Connections per Server - 4 (default 20) Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 8 (default 40) 8. Used ModemChk to create the log posted above. 9. In Control Panel -> Printers -> I right clicked the default printer, went to the Ports Tab -> highlighted the Modem COM port, clicked Configure Port and insured the Port Settings were 115200 bits per second to match that with the same setting in Modem Properties.
quietman7 Tl Posts: 6 USA	Posted - 12/3/2004 11:49:13 AM After using TCPOptimizer and rebooting, I connected to the Internet and was able to stay connected for an hour leaving it idle without browsing for most of the time. I never lost the connection before I decided to shut it down for the evening. I also noted my page loading appeared much better although my initial connection speed remained the same as always (slow). I believe my connection speed is directly attributed to my USR Winmodem since I use an older USR model on my wife's PC and connect at higher speeds. Anyway this morning I connected at the usual speed and stayed online for 8 hours without a disconnect. For now it appears the repeat of these last steps and a few corrections solved the disconnect problem. But I am asking Santa to bring me a USR Pro Modem for Christmas.
