Hi, I have an Averatec PC with a smartlink modem. When I first got the PC it connected regularly above 42.6. I decided to upgrade to Win XP SP2 and in the process it upgraded the drivers to what it considered WHQL. Well my connect speed went from 42.6 to a consistent 26.4. I managed to get the original drivers back on with connect speeds averaging 41.2. I then got the idea to use smartlinks driver upgrade 4.05 and recently 4.06. Installs were successful but with them connect speed was still diminished to an average of 32kbs with an ocassional 36kbs for a high end. I liked the smartlink driver upgrade cause the modem lights worked with them as opposed to my original drivers which just dumped a modem icon in systray which just sat there. I have since gone back to the original drivers and now my connect speed alternates between 37.2 and 38.6, something I could live with I guess but I am wondering if there is anything I could do improve connect speed to near what it was originally or any ideas on how to get the smartlink upgrade drivers to work with better connect speed. Thanks
v.Richard

It is a mistake to focus on connect speed.
What matters is throughput. If you never measured throughput before the problem developed, there's no way to really know if you're worse off now than before.
Many modems "don't tell the truth" when they report to you the connect rate.

You could uninstall SP2 - take some throughput measurements and then re-install the SP2 upgrade.

Aloha! Richard.

I think I've found the problem. The phone line in the attic leading to the phone jack is tangled up in all the home runs of the electrical wiring leading to the power panel. When the larger appliances kick on I got the idea to plug a phone into the jack(which is an seperate phone line and phone number than the house phone) and dialed a number and had a listen to the roaring sound on the phone line. I guess I'm going to rewire it and avoid contact with any other electrical wiring. Does anyone make a phone line filter that would help?

I don't recommend using phone line filters because often they will filter out part of the good signal you want thereby reducing the speed you would otherwise attain.
Re-routing the phone wire should take care of the problem, although other devices that you have connected to the phone line can also have an effect.

Aloha! Richard.
