I have this laptop here, and I cant connect to the internet at all. Im using the same username and password (for dialup connection) as i use on my normal computer, and it doesnt work.

All it says in the hardware info is that its modem is a LUCENT WIN MODEM. no further info.

Does this modem require some kind of special settings?

Need more info.
Do you get a dial tone - does it dial the phone number?
You should be getting a DUNs error - what error # do you get?

i get the error 678 . it says there is no answer.

however i checked one billion times that the number im dialing is correct, and when my other computer dials that number, it works just fine.

what could be wrong?

It could be that the modem isn't actually dialing the correct number - or many other things.
Post your modem log
www.modemsite.com/56k/modemlog.asp

In order to see the phone number the modem is told to dial in the modemlog, add
e1
to extra settings
www.modemsite.com/56k/initmagic.asp

You can also test the dialing/connect capabilities of the modem using Hyperterminal connected directly to COM port of modem - see
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp
www.modemsite.com/56k/usehyper.asp

Aloha! Richard.
