I got an E-Machines 633si CPU for free. It had Windows Millenium but would not boot. I installed Windows 98SE with
my CD from my older CPU. Everything fine, but the Modem is not detected, and I have tried everything I know and then some. The Modem is a MR560LPM which apparently does NOT work with Windows 98. (how could that be?). I've downloaded
updated drivers from eMachines and other sites, but no luck.
I always get a "modem failed to respond" message, or a "port already open" message, to the point where I have managed to confuse myself. Yes, I have removed it, then reinstalled it, everything I have been advised to do.

Either the modem card is bad, or something else is the problem.

I don't know how to test the card to see if it's working,
but everything else seems to work in the Motherboard, other than the PCI Audio which has a yellow exclamation symbol in
Device Manager, and another PCI "unsupported" item. I have a feeling that is the issue.

Any advice will be appreciated.

The modem is a PCTel - which is now owned by Conexant.
Try generic drivers
