Ok here is my problem. I installed this modem I had laying around in my 98 machine and Win98 won't detect it. Here's info I have so far that may help anyone in finding my prob.

-The Modem is an Actiontec 56k (v.90 compliant, 56k flex compliant) Winmodem with PCtel Chipset.
-This modem has worked before in my other computer with Win98 and XP.
-I have tried both Actiontec's drivers and the original OEM drivers that I know for sure are for this modem and still nothing.
-My BIOS is Plug-and-Play Compatible.
-I've tried detecting the modem via the Modems thing in Control Panel and it couldn't locate it on any ports (1,2,3,4).
-I've made sure that all drivers were uninstalled in Device Manager and rebooted and still no detection.
-I've tried all other PCI slots and with only another card installed (PCI Vid Card)
-I've done several combinations of the things above with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated even if you don't have an answer please respond.

Once you try and install a winmodem using add new hardware wizard, you may have problem.
It looks like you've tried -everything-
If on all the tries you've also *removed* everything related to unsuccessful install attempts, you're close to the point of having to try a totally clean OS re-install. (I'd make *sure* the modem works in another machine before doing that...)

Aloha! Richard.
