(Yes, I'm still using NT. What can I say?)

It might just be my system but I found that installing the 8.3 driver on my system, broke my RAS connection manager (or in plain language, broke my dial up networking) the most intelligble message being "Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because it could not load one or more communication DLLs..." displayed in the event log.

Reverting to 5.92 resolved the problem. Also doing the time honored trick of copying the ltmodem.sys from the 8.3 distribution seems to have worked around the problem. It's too early to tell if I'll have any problem with this, since this is just my second dial up connection since then.

Thanks for any info.

When your modem friendly name changes in NT4, the RAS service needs to bind to the new modem name. When our company name changed from Lucent to Agere Systems, our modem friendly name eventually changed. Try installing version 8.30 again, then click around NT4 to find what I'm talking about. It takes several seconds to think, and then you might need to reboot, but after that it should work.

Your "time-honored trick" of copying the ltmodem.sys file and then rebooting should also work fine. The "Lucent Win Modem" to "Agere Win Modem" change is in the ltmodem.inf file.

Thanks, I haven't tried your first suggestion yet, but as I said I copied over the driver and it works. Probably not the best idea but I don't use the other EXEs in the distribution - is there a pointer to what ltmsg is supposed to do?

Thanks,

D.

LTmsg has served a variety of purposes over the years. In your NT4 system, I believe its only purpose is to pop up a warning message if the modem detects an overcurrent condition upon going off hook. Some notebook PC users in a strange hotel or office have the unsafe practice of plugging into random "phone" jacks until they get dial tone. Some PBX digital ports attached to a modem can supply large amounts of current -- enough to damage the modem hardware. Hence the overcurrent protection feature.

BTW Ed, does LTMsg do anything more on Win2K?

Thanks,

D.

LTmsg is a general Ring 3 helper application that does things that the driver installed at Ring 0 cannot do. Besides popping up the UI for overcirrent protection, LTmsg also plays a part in playing modem call progress sounds through the system audio. New internal modems can save cost by eliminating the speaker hardware on board.
