I have had to reformat and reload my system. This was previously run by the shop before XMAS to cure a cookie conflict which reappeared after XAMAS

I am running XP with service pack 2

MY MODEM IS iNTEL 536 v93 AND I HAVE LOADED LATEST DRIVERS

before shop reload modem was 100% reliable at 22 kbps

after shop reload modem was 100% reliable at 22 kbps

after my reload modem connects reliably at 45 kbps but drops between a few seconds and minutes 100%

I had this problem when I purchased the machine 1 year ago

the shop tried 5 or 6 different modem types all the same dropping

they eventually fixed they claim by swapping the processor

I now suspect this is a windows probnlem

I have two other machines that runreliably at 40-50 kbps on the same phone connection

Any help suggestions greatffully received (the shop are reluctant to help me any further)

Hi Richard

Thanks for the suggestion

TRied this last night and it offered some improvement it now drops between 5 and 15 minutes. I trie dother speed settings such as +MS=V32, V32B all of which connected slower and also dropped.

Analysing the modem log I get the message

hanging up the modem
hardware hangup by lowering DTR
Detected CD dropped from lowering DTR

I also read

TSP(0000):lineevent:linecallstate_disconnected(0X1)
TSP(0000):lineevent:linecallstate_idle
TSP completing Async operation(0x0001030b)status0x00000000
tsp(0000):dropping call

Not sure if these are relevant

Any further suggestions

Thanks

v.Richard

if 'hanging up modem' comes before anything else related to hanging up (loss of carrier/etc.), there's probably some software setting in a net-aware application (or spyware/malware) that's causing the hang up.
Many programs, including browsers, e-mail, newsreaders, have settings to automatically dial connection. If they are set to dial a connection different from the connection you are on, can cause your modem to hang up.

Suggest - remove all but 1 connectoid so there is only 1 connection to dial and remove any auto-connect settings in any software you have. Run spyware check.

Hi Richard

Thanks again for the prompt feedback

I only have one dial up connection set up on teh machine.

As far as I am aware teh only other programs which auto access the internet are Windows autoupdate and Norton Might this be leading to the problem?

Rgds

Nick
