I have an Agere ac'97 softmodem in my Compaq (presario R3000)notebook. This modem has worked well in America, but now I have a problem in Croatia. When I try to connect directly to the ISP I get error 678, but when I try to connect throught the phone central office in the firm (with two zeros in front of the ISP modem number) I succed. I upgraded driver to v2.1.41.0, and tried with many extra strings, but it didn't work. There is a part of modemlog that looks suspicius to me, because I get 'no carrier':

NO CARRIER - means the modem did not complete a handshake.

Are you using tone dialing? You may need to lengthen the tone/tone spacing - add
s7=120
initialization string (extra settings) -
www.modemsite.com/56k/initmagic.asp

When you try and make a call, you should HEAR the modem dialing and answer of other modem - do you hear an answer? Do modems start to make handshake noises?

The latest driver is 2.1.47 (not .40) - www.modemsite.com/56k/premiumc.asp

If the line is not 56k-compatible, disable 56k on the modem -
+MS=V34
in extra settings

Windows/telephony-dial properties - have you set the location you are dialing from as Croatia?
Check modem's country code setting - response to
ati9
using Hyperterminal-
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp

Aloha! Richard.

Hi Richard...

Yes, I am using tone dialing. I already tried with that extra strings (s7=120 and +MS=v34) but it didn't work. When I try to make a call I can hear modem dialing but it's pretty quiet (they start handshaking, but the sound is also quit). On the other hand, when I try to connect throught the phone central dialing is much louder and connection is established. Is it possible that the phone central is doing some kind of filltering the signal?
Modem's country code setting is ok, I tried with hyperterminal. I also tried to make a call using hyperterminal, but then I got NO DIALTONE.

Thx, Jerko

The phone central using different sound system than call progress monitoring for data connection - probably not the problem.
I would suggest trying to increase the time to obtain carrier - this can be set through your dial-up connectoid
www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp
or directly via extra setting (init string) -
s7=##
where ## = # of seconds to wait for carrier - try putting in 90 for # of seconds.

Aloha! Richard.

No, it didn't work. Now I tried to call some fictive number that doesn't realy exists, just to see what will happen. And I got the same error, with the same modem log - no carrier. I can hear modem dialling, and the begining of the handshaking, and that's it...
All the settings are ok, line is also ok, and I can only connect throught the phone central. It doesn't make sense to me???
Is there anything alse I could try?
Thx

It is central office in the firm, (local telephone exchange), I have to put 00 in front of the number I dial, so if the ISP number than I dial derectly is 076610000, I have to dial 00076610000 when I connect throught the central office. And it works fine.

X3 = Enable busy detection, *disable dialtone detection*
In "Phone and Modem Options." is "Wait for dial tone before dialing" unchecked.
