I bought a new desktop recently. It has XP and Agere PCI Soft Modem. It connects at 20-26K bps. I use a laptop on the same line. The laptop has Windows 98, and a Lucent WinModem. It connects at 40k or better. What can be done to make the Agere modem work as fast as the modem on the laptop? Or should I replace it?

What driver version are you running?
2.1.47 is the latest Softmodem driver -
www.modemsite.com/56k/premiumc.asp

Also Try: check desktop modem connected directly to telco demarc or with every other device removed from phone line
www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp

Make sure you have no init string entered

Post your post-call diagnostics (result from ati11 using Hyperterminal) and modemlog

What's the response to
ati3
using Hyperterminal? (That will show driver version.)

The ati11 result you posted is missing the top part - but between your modemlog (19.2k connect) and the i11 that does show (14.4k final rate / retrains and rate renegs) is horrible.

You could have a bad modem. Check it's physical installation. Maybe try it in another PCI slot. Check the phone cable/jack - use only a 2-wire phone cord - do the demarc test; try calling a different access #/ISP via Hyperterminal.

Aloha! Richard.

The ati3 says: Agere SoftModem Version 2.1.47

Here is a new ati 11 test, using my usual ISP:

Description Status
--------------- ------------
Last Connection V.90
Initial Transmit Carrier Rate 21600
Initial Receive Carrier Rate 14400
Final Transmit Carrier Rate 26400
Final Receive Carrier Rate 16800
Protocol Negotiation Result LAPM
Data Compression Result V.42bis
Estimated Signal/Noise Ratio (dB) 20
Receive Signal Power Level (-dBm) 26
Transmit Signal Power Level (-dBm) 10
Round Trip Delay (msec) 12
Near Echo Level (-dBm) 21
Far Echo Level (-dBm) 48
Transmit Frame Count 0
Transmit Frame Error Count 0
Receive Frame Count 2
Receive Frame Error Count 0
Retrain by Local Modem 0
Retrain by Remote Modem 0
Rate Renegotiation by Local Modem 2
Rate Renegotiation by Remote Modem 3
Call Termination Cause 0
Robbed-Bit Signaling 0
Digital Loss (dB) 00
Remote Server ID NA

Then I did the ATI 11 test again, using a different ISP. Here's what I got this time:

Login: Description Status
--------------- ------------
Last Connection V.92
Initial Transmit Carrier Rate 24000
Initial Receive Carrier Rate 9600
Final Transmit Carrier Rate 24000
Final Receive Carrier Rate 9600
Protocol Negotiation Result LAPM
Data Compression Result V.44
Estimated Signal/Noise Ratio (dB) 23
Receive Signal Power Level (-dBm) 29
Transmit Signal Power Level (-dBm) 10
Round Trip Delay (msec) 51
Near Echo Level (-dBm) 21
Far Echo Level (-dBm) 47
Transmit Frame Count 0
Transmit Frame Error Count 0
Receive Frame Count 2
Receive Frame Error Count 0
Retrain by Local Modem 0
Retrain by Remote Modem 0
Rate Renegotiation by Local Modem 2
Rate Renegotiation by Remote Modem 1
Call Termination Cause 0
Robbed-Bit Signaling 0
Digital Loss (dB) 00
Remote Server ID NA

OK

The computer manufacturer sent me another modem, so the one I'm using now is a replacement. Same problem with both modems.

I tried moving the modem to a new PCI slot, but no help there either.

I haven't tried the demarc test yet. I've always thought the problem must be somewhere else, since I get good connections on the old laptop, using the exact same line, ISP, etc.

Thanks very much for looking at this. It has been very frustrating.

I think the demarc test should be next -
My guess would be that the problem is in the wiring or other devices connected to the wiring.
Sometimes another phone/cordless/answering machine, etc. can impair performance of modem; corrosion in the jack you are plugging into, bad line cord, etc.

Aloha! Richard.
