Anybody help with this one?
My modem is a Motorola SM56 Speakerphone incorporated into my motherboard. This worked fine under Win98 but I had problems after upgrading to WinXp. I sorted it out and had a few weeks service from it. Then I installed SP2 and, after pestering from Microsoft, downloaded some upgrades. One of the upgrades related to the modem. From that point the modem stopped working (thanks Microsoft!). I tried doing a System Restore to a point prior to the upgrade but to no avail. I tried uninstalling the driver and installing the latest one from motorola.com. This gets near to the end of the installation process then hangs (during loading of sm56co.dll). I get an error message which says "Windows was unable to install the modem". I have to clear the hang using C-A-D. Other things I have tried include cleaning out my registry using Registry Mechanic, clearing the COM ports as described on this site and moving the oem*.inf and mdm*.inf files, also as described on this site. I have also tried installing other drivers. Always the result is the same, the installation process will not complete.
Any ideas?

Have you tried a "Modem Rollback Procedure (Windows XP only)" rather than a System Restore .
The current driver from Motorola has information in the ReadMe.doc file.
"This document details installation, troubleshooting, and usage of the SM56 software modem."
quote:
Modem Rollback Procedure (Windows XP only)
1.Open the Windows Control Panel
2.Double click the System Icon.
3.Select the Hardware tab and Select the Device Manager button.
4.Double Click the Modems item.
5.Right Click on the Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem device and select Properties from the popup menu.
6.Select the Driver tab and press Roll Back Driver button.
7.Select Yes when asked to reboot the system.

If no joy;
You should be able to disable the modem in the motherboard BIOS. This will stop the driver from loading and you can "clean" you system of the old driver installs.
Boot into Safe Mode check for multiple installs of modem and check for a modem sound system under Sound Controllers and uninstall both.

The file sm56co.dll is a "coinstaller" (only used for NT based systems NT/2K/XP) for what I believe (?) is the "soft" speakerphone.
Soft Speakerphone uses your computers sound system and Direct X for Speakerphone functions.
A reinstall of the driver may be failing at "sm56co.dll" because the modem speakerphone sound system was never uninstalled.

Boot back into Windows and let Windows adjust its resources.
Now enable the modem from the BIOS and try to install the driver.

Let us know if it works.

Thanks Pi.
Tried all those things but situation is still the same - I get "Windows was unable to install the modem".
I give up. I am not going to spend any more hours on this.
I can get a new PCI modem for about 10 UK pounds and (hopefully) get it up and running in less than an hour.
Why are these things so 'kin complicated? Have the people who build these things never heard of the KISS principle?
Sorry about the rant!
