Trio3b Tl Posts: 4 USA | Posted - 2/14/2005 11:01:09 PM Newb has new dialup connection with Intel 536ep internal PCI modem in MDK Linux 10.0.(kernel 2.6.x) Modem drivers on disk were outdated so used latest Intel 536ep chipset drivers and that installed and compiled OK. Configured in Kppp. Connection seems fine, but downloading files from different sites to test modem, and all keep stalling, then I guess there is a reconnect and it continues..stalls....continues...etc. I am able to dwnload 1 to 3mb files but anything more is a hassle. This modem tests out OK on a Wxp Pc on the exact same phone line. Maybe some settings in the modem commands dialogue box? The settings in the Kppp are: maybe someone can see a simple error and help out. |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 2/16/2005 2:40:58 PM What speed is the modem connecting at? What initialization string is being given to the modem? I'd suggest trying to limit modem connect speed to lower rate or disabling 56k - Aloha! Richard. |
Trio3b Tl Posts: 4 USA | Posted - 2/17/2005 6:31:35 PM As per my post: init string 1 ATZ Dialing string ATDT connecting at 44600. surfing seems ok - I left the sound on and hear the modems chirp and warble then silence.. then the white noise, but this all only happens sporadically. It is the file downloads that fluctuate wildly from 6.0 kb/s to 3.2kb/s then level off then go to 1.3>800b/s>200b/s>stall....then reconnect....etc. My Wxp with a cheap AMR modem connects fluidly at 5.7kb/s continuously on the SAME phone line. As per my previous post, am using Linux Kppp dialer which has a modem command dialogue box. There are tons of modem commands sites but none tell where or when to enter these commands IN CONTEXT! It can't all be trial and error can it? Thanks for any help |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 2/19/2005 8:48:13 AM I would not suggest using ATZ as init string - as this is a reset command that can place the modem in an 'unknown' state. The init string should be AT&F and then, after the F, any additional modifiers to factory defaults. Another modem does better on same phone line: well, you have a modem/driver combo that doesn't do well with your phone line. The cause is likely to be the driver itself which makes your softmodem become a modem. Short of an updated driver that solves the problem, or replacing the modem, your best hope is probably to REDUCE (speed limit) the modem to eliminate the retraining/errors that reduce your throughput. Aloha! Richard. |
Trio3b Tl Posts: 4 USA | Posted - 2/27/2005 11:40:11 PM Added +MS=V34,0 to AT&F in init string 1 and this did reduce the stalls, but it's really slow. Connects now at 28600 and dwmloads at 2.8 - 3.2 kb/s. Should these modifiers be added to init string 1 or can they be placed in init string 2. Drivers are latest from intelsite for Intel 536ep modemchipset, but modem maker has no updated drivers. Any other ideas to speed things along? (No DSL around here) Thanks |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 3/1/2005 9:51:57 AM Don't know that it would matter where in init string you put - shouldn't matter unless it precedes some string that overrides it. Now that you've determined you can get a more stable connect with 56k disabled, you might try speed-limiting a 56k connect with appropriate +MS=V90,...... commands instead of V34 - see Aloha!
