Upgraded from win 98 to xp and now my modem will not connect to my isp. XP recognizes modem , modem dials but just as it connects i get a timed out message everytime. Is this more likely to be a driver issue or settings in XP.

Increase the amount of time to obtain carrier - edit your connectoid properties
www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp

If that does not help, please post your modem log
www.modemsite.com/56k/modemlog.asp

Aloha! Richard.

I was having very similar problem, mine arose when I needed to rebuild my system from scratch but at the same time I also added DSL. I could not dial out on my 56k modem but no problems with my ADSL and 3ComEtherlink. The following is something I have submitted the this site regarding how fax with DSL connection. I believe this might also help in your situation. I was reading your log file and it looked very similar to mine (in fact my dates were even the same only 2 hours earlier in the day!)!So here it is review it and use it or disregard it completely.

I could get no dial tone when dialing my phone tools to make phone call or send fax. Tools said line was down but modem appeared to be working!

I fianlly got my fax and DSL to work together with absolutely no problems.
I'm running win Me, have a 56k modem, and a 3Com Etherlink card connected to ISP by Ethernet ADSL modem. I have splitter type filters on my lines @main line in it splits the DSL line is connected to the ADSL modem which is then connected to the 3Com Etherlink @ tower. The phone line which is connected to the 56k modem and then to my phone as usual.
My modem was showing on Com3 but nothing on Com1, so I checked my IRQ's and Com3 didn't show anywhere but Com1 did. Noticed that PCI modem enumerator is on IRQ 11, Com1 is @ IRQ 4. It all seemed a jumbled up mess. So I began investigating because the modem seemed to work but I could get no dial tone when dialing my phone tools to make phone call or send fax.
Here's the solution I found:

Go To the Device Manage and expand System Devices find the PCI Bus open to the properties choose the IRQ Stering tab and uncheck the box "Get IRQ table using ACPI Bios" choose OK and you will be prompted to restart your computer, do so DO NOT choose to restart later or you will have to repeat the process all over again. When you restart it recognizes new hardware and basically rebuilds the system devices doesn't take long you will then be prompted to restart yet again, do so. At this point I was given a message that Driver File display may need a new driver (so far it doesn't and I'm not going to mess with a good thing) chose ok and system brought up Diplay properties screen and I closed it. The system finished the reboot and I have been able to fax and use my phone tools ever since!!! Went Baak to my system information and checked IRQ's and I still have the same jumbled up mess as before, but now it works. I would absolutely give it a try!!!!

Your modem log indicates you are connecting without error correction or compression.
The modem will not work (with any reliability at all) without an error correction connection.
REMOVE your init string / extra settings

Modem is now sorted, must have been something to do with upgrade from 98 to xp, formated harddrive and done a clean install now everything works, thanks for the replies.
