Ravage Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 3/1/2005 5:59:58 AM I'm planning on upgrading my computer next month and unfortunately that means I'm going to have to replace my trusty ISA modem. I was planning on getting the USR 5610a modem...but after looking through the forums on this site...i'm not too sure about that :) I'm primarily concerned with it's online gaming performance (e.g. latency/cpu usage/stability/reliability). I don't want anything that's going to increase my ping or reduce my FPS. Does anyone have any suggestions? V.92/Voice/Fax isn't particularly relevant to me, but no complaints if the modem happens to have it. I'd prefer PCI...but serial would be ok too.

Ravage Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 3/1/2005 12:24:08 PM It's a Creative Modem Blaster Flash56II ISA (Di5601-1). It uses a hardware Conexant chipset. I'm not sure of the exact Conexant model/version though, as the numbering scheme on it is totally different then what I could find at Conexant's site. My connection speed is pretty consistent (48-50k, usually 49.2k). I tested the throughout with Net.Medic, it was a steady 48.4k with an occasional dip into the upper 30s (connection speed was 49.2k).

Javi76 Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 3/17/2005 5:42:48 PM I have a general question, well 2 actually. 1) I put a modem from my old computer in my new one. I don't know what make/model it is for it came w/ my IBM Aptiva desktop that came w/ Windows 98 (to get an idea of the age). I now have a more modern computer that was built for me but had no modem. Is there any way to find out the make/model so I can find the driver to make it work? I have gone through the install wizard and found that by manually installing it I can choose "Modem" than make "IBM" and there is only one available driver built in to XP, but it gives an error message saying that it can not verify it's compatibility, so I'm not sure it's a good idea to install it. When it is recognized it says it forund "PCI Simple Communications Controller", which I am guessing is a generic term for a modem that Windows does not know the make/model of. 2) Is, or can, the modem be used for PC Fax type apps? Or is there a specific type of hardware (other than a plain ole modem) that is needed for faxing through your PC? I don't need it for internet access, I connect through a 10/100/1000 network card. Thanks for in advance for the feedback! |
