I have Dial-up Agere PCI v.92 56K, using XP,OE6,IE6. I got the newest drivers from the webpage. My ISP is not the kind that times out or charges per time. I can follow just about any instructions, and can achieve the narrow expertise required to solve a given problem, then I move on and forget the details.

It connects fine. When I am surfing: sometimes it will stay connected unlimited, sometimes gets homepage but won't connect further to links, or stops connecting further along links (with the unable to find page... window)after varying times. The little computers stay blinking in the taskbar when this happens, saying the Speed etc., but the phoneline, rather than have the staticy sound, is totally dead. The only way to overcome this is to disconnect then reconnect, then it starts over either better or worse than before.

During high usage times on the ISP I'm sure some of this behavior is expected, but it goes beyond that:

When I click on "disconnect" it freezes everything on the computer for awhile while it disconnects. Rarely it will disconnect immediately, but usually freezes everything for a minute ot two.

It has been doing this for quite awhile and I have asked my ISP but they say the problem is not on their end. But it used to disconnect without taking over the whole computer, and it used to stay connected better than it does (I even use the "stayconnect" application.)

Once in the past I was advised to change settings in Properties somewhere to "MS+34" (or something like that), and it helped then because at that time it was even worse with regard to staying connected. (I followed instructions but don't understand them.)

I don't have a clue if these things relate or are separate issues. That is my experience as best I can describe it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Pflueger

You could have a 'bad modem' - could also be something else.
The modem's post-call diagnostics - which you get by issuing the command
ati11
using Hyperterminal after disconnecting would help to narrow down what's going on.
See
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp
for setting up Hyperterminal to talk to modem, then post the ati11 results. Several would be even better, esp 1 or more where the disconnect takes a long time.

Aloha! Richard.
