I have installed a win lucent modem into a new PC running XP SP2. The problem is that no dial tone is recognised, even the though the computer has recognised the modem. However, the bigger problem is that when the phone line is plugged into the PC, the telephones elsewhere in the house have no dial tone (regardless of whether the PC is switched on or off). Needless to say this is more than a little confusing, not to mention frustrating. Has anyone seen this kind of problem before? Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

The symptoms you describe (no dial tone when phone line is plugged in) normally occurs when you have a bad/defective modem.
It could also be caused by a bad line cord depending upon your phone wiring - make sure the line cord you use has only 2 wires connected through to the 2 plugs.
