Basically the problem I have is that my modem does not detect the dial tone (Error 678) when I try and connect to the internet on my current phone line. I have spoken to British Telecom about this and after a lot of fiddling around they said that my V.92 Toshiba Software modem is not compatible with their system and that I need to buy a V.90 modem. Obviously I don't want to have to do this and so does anyone have any ideas how I might be able to connect?

The modem appears to be working fine as I can connect at my parents house (they're on Eurobell) and worked fine using MSN in the US. I have changed the region settings, do not wait for dial tone etc with no effect.

I also tried an alternative ISP (Wanadoo) and had the same problem ie no Dial Tone detected.

There shouldn't be any reason I can think of that you can't use the modem you have - (I think BT didn't give you the straight talk...)
Make sure the line cord has only 2 wires connected through;
Use Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port to test as described at
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp

If you still have problem, reply including modemlog in your post

Richard,

Thank you for your help. I've finally managed to solve the problem. After changing virtually every setting my modem had (with no success), I found the way to get it working was actually to buy a double phone jack so that a normal phone and the computer can be plugged into the wall at the same time. It now recognises the computer fine. Why it didn't work when it was plugged directly into the phone line I don't know!

Itchy -
see the "Trouble" paragraph near the bottom of
www.modemsite.com/56k/sv92p.asp
which explains how to disable the analog line detection.
Before doing that - I would suggest
(1) make sure you are using a line cord that has only 2 wires connected through to each end
(2) make sure you have the country code set correctly for your modem
(3) make sure you are using the latest modem driver

Aloha! Richard.
