Hi,

I am not very knowledgeable as far as modems go. I just started using my CRM software (ACT! 6.0) and I would like to be able to use some of the program's advanced phone dialing functions. I am running this program on my laptop and it is an older Dell Inspiron (7500). It came with a Psion Gold Card Global (v .90 56k) PCMCIA modem. This does not have voice capability. I am looking at the minimum at a PCMCIA modem with voice capability so that I can at least use some of the telephony tasks. What I really want is a Data/Voice/Fax/Speakerphone modem with Caller ID functionality so that I can use the modem to not only dial but use it with my headset and be able to properly log calls (with some of this automated. The caller ID feature would let my CRM identify the caller and automatically go to that record in the database and possibly automate a script (bring up notes, etc. related to where the contact is in the sales cycle, etc.). This would be really neat and make things more efficient.

My question is this: Is there a modem out there with all these features that is NOT a PCI card? I need either PCMCIA (I don't think this is available), serial or USB connections). If so,is this going to set me way back monetarily vs. a simpler Voice compatible modem?

By the way, I did read some articles on this site and do realize that a "voice" modem does not give me the ability to use voice telephony. But I need to replace my modem anyway because it does not seem to work very well with the Windows 2000 dialer (it hangs up before the call is completed). I also don't like that annoying "Talk" button and from what I understand, a speakerphone modem will not only give me the ability to use my headset with it but will do away with the need for the "Talk" button.

Any suggestions, links, etc. to help me with this would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Oh, and by the way...

I don't really need this modem for an internet connection. I am alreay using a DSL modem for that. I may want to use it for faxes, though.

Thank again,

I don't think you'll find a PCMCIA modem that has speakerphone capabilities - you probably can find a PCMIA that has voice/fax/data without much trouble.

External serial or USB - should also be available in a speakerphone/voice/data/fax flavor.

Aloha! Richard.
