When the modem dials my current isp, it emits a long dial sound, halts, and does another long dial sound, then shows up the "verifying...." message. My previous ISPs dont show that odd behavior (1 short dial sound then verifies the username/password). What does that "2 long dial sounds" mean or indicate. 2. I'm about to purchase a new modem. The only available options for me are a slew of external rockwell-based serial and usb modems(Dlink, Puresoft, Genius, Jetway) and a 3COM/USR 56k external v.92 USB modem. With regard to 2nd question - without actually trying each modem on your particular line, you cannot know for sure which is better; however, if I had to make a 'blind' choice, I'd go for the USR. Actually, I prefer older (no-longer-manufactured) USR Sportster or Courier modems (like the 1786-series). Also see Aloha! Richard. |
