Hi all, I'm new to these forums, but I'm hoping someone can help me. I've been having a big problem with speed lately. Although windows reports that I connect over 40kbps, in actuallity I get about 5 kbps. (I tried many line tests and also the built in line test from my ISP's software).

I've used the ping command and pretty much anywhere but google.com times out. I don't why, but no where else seems to be pingable. I've tried cnn.com, yahoo.com and a few other sites, but if it doesn't time out, it returns times in the thousands like 2500ms. Although google is the only working one, it returns back thousands every few times, however it doesn't seem to time out all too often. Page access has come to a crawl and I don't even think about doing anything more than checking my email.

The problem started a couple of days ago, I feel I should mention. I tried plugging in my computer (as opposed to the home computer) and logging on to juno. I kept getting no dialtone errors. Upon checking the phone, I realized that the whole house's connection was out, i.e. none of the phones had a dialtone, and I couldn't call my house. After about 10 mins, and upon disconnection of the phone cable from my modem, it came back on. So of course I tried to log on again. Again, line went dead for another 10 mins or so. So i held my phone against my ear, and plugged in the cable into my modem. It would click a few times and go dead, if I pulled it out, it would click again and come back. By now I figured it was my modem. So out that came and promptly tossed and grabbed a modem that I knew worked from the home pc. Tossed it into my computer, and no more dial tone problem. It was fine to plug in the line, no more dead connection. I could log in, but now the speed was unbelievable. I could barely access anything, it usually took a few refreshes to load the page wihtout timming out.

What I have done to try and fix this:

First tried switching access numbers (juno)
Next switched to a different ISP (people pc)
Tried a different computer logging into both ISPs
Switched access numbers on new ISP (people pc)
Bought a new modem today (56k, v92, Creative External)

With all that done, nothing has changed whatsoever. It is
still sluggish and I can't figure out why.
Please help,
my computer specs(if you need them):

P4 2.26 @ 2.4GHz
512MB DDR @ 282MHz
Creative Modem Blaster (56k V92)
Maxtor 120GB Hard drive
And I am running Windows XP home.

Try connecting modem directly to the demarc, or if that is not possiblem DISCONNECT every other device from the phone line EXCEPT your modem.
Make sure to use a telephone line cord that has only 2 wires connected through. Try a different line cord.
Check the condition of your phone jacks for corrosion, loose connections, etc.
see
www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp
If none of above helps, Ask the telco to check your phone line.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks for the help, it turned out to be a phone plugged into one of the other rooms! It was an old phone, any clue why it did that? Thanks again!

Some devices, even when on-hook can effect the line...

Aloha! Richard.
