Use patch cord from speakerphone modem speaker output and plug this into Microphone jack of your PC sound card. Then use Volume Control / Advanced/Properties / Record to turn mic on and you should be able to use sound recorder.

Aloha! Richard.

Dear richard thanks for your reply,,
from your advice i gather that my sm 56 modem has to have speaker socket that i need to connect to the mic socket on the sound card,, if so I have a small problem , my modem dos'nt have any sockets more than 2 jacks ( one for the line and one for the hand set phone ) and in theory it should do the recording via the MB!!!! .
I have downloaded a free prog that douse a scan recording and even though it can record from the mic but not from the modem! i tried to fix the audio settings for the system but with no luck,,, i wonder where a'm going wrong?.

The jack for headset - is that a head that includes microphone and earphone? If so, that jack would contain the audio in and out signals, and would work with a patch cord using jack for headset.

Aloha! Richard.

There is no dedicated hardware for speakerphone on the newer SM56 modems. They use what Motorola calls a soft speakerphone. Sound and mic are interfaced over the PCI BUS and it uses the DirectX driver.

To record with your modem you need the voice version of the driver and software made to work with the voice "serial wave" driver.
Most TAM "Telephone Answering Machine" software will record phone calls or Modem Spy and similar software will work.

Unfortunately most all modems do not detect the on-hook and off-hook of the phone connected to the modem phone jack properly so starting and stopping the recording automatically using the modem does not work well. Sound quality is not always good using the modem .

You can record WITHOUT using a modem

"Direct Line Connector" does not use the modem.
If you want the recording to start automatically, and better sound quality, you need a Direct Line Connector

The adapter connects to the phone line or to the phone handset and then to the sound card.
You can then use any wave recorder.
Recording software that starts and stops with VOX control and compresses the sound is best

alrite guys am back agin,, and sure enough i ended up buying a phone adapter that connects the phone directly to the line in on the sound card the only problem with this adapter is it uses manual recording interface ( it has a rec switch on it ) so to be able to compres and automate the call recordings i used a program called, scanner recorder, from http://www.davee.com/scanrec/index.html
so far it seems to work.so wish me luck and thank you all for your replies & help.
