In the past few days I purchased a new Dell Dimension 8400 that came with an Intel(R) 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem. This new computer replaces an older Dell, which had an aftermarket Zoom V.92 modem installed. With my older Dell computer and the Zoom modem, I was consistently connecting via dial-up with my ISP at an average speed of 34 - 37 kbs, which is reasonably fast considering the speeds my neighbors with the same ISP are reporting.

Well, after setting up my new computer and completing my Internet connection, you can imagine my surprise/disappointment to find that my new computer, with the newer Intel modem is only able to connect at a measily 16 - 19 kbs! Not what I expected!

After doing some research, I have found that my ISP has a list of modems that they say work better with their service than others. Although the modem I have is not on their list, I cannot figure out why my new modem (with all the latest technology) would not be at reasonably compatible with most ISP services out there? I'm also wondering if there is a setting for my modem that might improve my connection speed? Any suggestions/help will be appreciated.

Can you take your old modem and put it in your new computer?

Modem performace will vary based upon a number of factors - whether a modem is new or old is not necessarily one of them.
(34-37kbps is not a very good 56k rate to begin with).

Things you can try include:
putting modem in a different pci slot;
checking the routing/quality of the wiring/jacks from the modem to your phone wiring
check the modem connected directly to telco demarc

disable 56k on the modem

Richard,

I can put my old modem into my new computer, but after spending 2 hours on the phone last night with Dell's tech support, we think my problems may be related to a problem with the software supplied by my ISP rather than a problem with my modem. I will look into some of the things you mentioned and see if they help.

I know 34 - 37 kbs doesn't sound all that fast, but compared to speeds my neighbors get with the same ISP, I am at the upper end of the scale. I guess the phone lines where I live just won't support a much faster speed.

Stay tuned!

Basically, software supplied by an ISP (or anyone else) can't cause a modem to perform more poorly than if the software weren't there....
Unfortunately, there are many "support" people who haven't a clue. Actually calling anyone at Dell is something I'll only do if I want to endure torture - unless you're a major account, you'll be handled by an Indian who has all the time in the world to play games with you.....

Aloha! Richard.

Richard, agree wholeheartedly!

Last night I attempted to install my old modem, but to my surprise, the software that accompanied my old modem doesn't have all the stuff XP needs (even though the software says it's compatable with XP) so my old old modem won't function until I download the latest drivers. I'll look for them today, and see if I can find them. If not, then I may do a reinstall of my new modem and see if it corrects my problem.

Oh, I did disable 56K, but so far that hasn't helped. I also try some of the other stuff you mentioned if the reinstall doesn't work.

Pot Hole: try disabling the V.92 settings this sometimes helps if your ISP doesn't support V.92 mine doesn't so you can ask your ISP.On your old connection speed its not bad if you're some distance from the telco I'm 26529 ft from the telco 34 to 37 would be good speed for me.I have talked to a very good tech at SBC & that kind are few .He said that 28 to 32 was about all I should expect at this distance & if I was getting better I was lucky. He said the best you could get if you were right next to the telco was 50.3 & with some special filters 53.3

Actually, my ISP does support V.92, so that shouldn't be my problem. I'm wondering now if it is the type/brand of modem I have and not a software issue. My ISP (Bellsouth) has published a list of modems that are very compatable with their system, and my modem isn't on the list. That doesn't mean it won't work well, but it may have something to do with connection speed. reckon?

I guess because I was used to a 33 - 37 kbs connection speed with my old modem, that I'm hoping to find a way to get my new modem to at least equal the speeds my old modem was able to obtain. If anyone knows of any changes to my modem's settings that might help improve my connection speed, I'm all ears....
