Modem is dialing "what", your ISP.
You probable have one or more programs trying to check for updates.

Set your DUN (Dial Up Networking) to "Never dial a connection".

"Never dial a connection" stops the OS from automatically dialing when programs request access to the Internet.
It should not interfere when the "user" initiates a connection.

Are you getting any error messages when you try to connect manually ?

If your using IE (Internet Explorer) it has a "Never dial a connection" under Internet Options.

If the OS is dialing your ISP after booting your ISP should already be set as the default connection but I would check it anyway.
Check if "Never dial a connection" and your ISP is set to as the "default connection" under both DUN and Internet Options.

Do you regularly run a Spyware / Adware detection / removal and anti virus utility.

Are you using the latest Smartlink drivers ?

"page not found" is a browser error not a DUN error. This would indicate your modem is dialing and connecting but the browser your using can't connect to web pages.
Different problem than the first you might want to start a new thread with more details. OS, service packs, default browser and post modem log.

"Where di I locate DUN"; Device manager. Windows XP the DUN to your ISP is under Network Connections.
