I don't know if I should put so much importance on connection speeds, but it does seem to be lagging, I am currently having a drop in connection speeds, they are ALWAYS 26.4 kbps ALL THE TIME!
I had this problem before this time last year (spring, summer) right before my busy season. Then in the winter for a few months I had normal fluctuating speeds between 26 and 44 kbps.I had the phone company out 3 times last time this happened, but nothing helped.
I used an access number for another dialup service provider in the same town where my current provider is. I checked the modem log for three connections for each ISp.
Other ISP was 38.6,42.,and 44. kbps. My current ISP was ALWAYS 26.4! Modulation (speed?) is the ONLY difference that I can see. Current ISP is v.34 and OTHER is v.90 I have a website hosted with Current ISP. Could this have anything to do with it? Could they be forcing me to share bandwidth with my website? I have a Smart link modem V.92. Nothing whatsoever has changed on my end no additions no subtractions of ANY KIND.Both of these ISPs are in town,I can only assume they are using the same Tele lines. My neighbor down the street maybe 500ft away has the same ISP as I do and gets speed of 38.6, not sure if it's constant or not.
also my son has a laptop which I logged on at 45.?
I dont get it. any ideas?

Website hosted with ISP will have no effect on your dial-up speeds.

Brother's laptop - was this laptop connection tested on your phone line?

What version of Windows are you running? And, what driver version is running your modem?
Driver version is response to ati3 from Hyperterminal
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp

Check your connect speed with modem connected directly to telco demarc
www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp
is there any difference?

A different modem (different chipset) might give you different results.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks for your reply. Yes my sons laptop was tested on the same line (I only have one line) As far as drivers and chipset, This happened before and without making any changes,(on my end ) it got better, for a few months, then back to slow speeds.I would like someonme to address MODULATION SPEEDS. Is modulation the conversion from analog to digital? If so does this possibly mean that this is the ISPs modem I'm being routed to? In doing the connection speed comparisons on both ISPs this is the only difference. V.34 for my current and v.90 for other ISP. Thanks

V.34 - Analog modem protocol that can allow up to 33.6kbps max. connect speeds.

V.90 - Digital/56k modem protocol that permits up to 56kbps downstream and 33.6kbps upstream

By default, the modem will automatically attempt to connect using V.90; if this fails (due to line quality, the other end, or whatever), the modem will then attempt connecting with V.34 protocol.

Aloha! Richard.
