I have just bought an netcomm IN5920_1 56K V.92 PCI Modem and am trying to install it in a Compaq Deskpro EN series 6350/6 4 A/P.
Op sys Windows 98
Mem 64mb

Modem connected to telephone line and telephone out working (ie dial tone heard through handpiece)

Modem installed in PCI expansion slot
Nothing connected to either external 9pin ports labelled com1 & com2 on mother board
Ran "Add Hardware" - Modem not identified, Therefore manually installed to Com1
From Settings- Control Panel- System- System properties- Device Manager- Ports(Com & Lpt) - Com1 & Com2 installed
After checking all other Device Manager categories there are no Yellow Exclamation marks or Question marks to be seen

From Settings- Control Panel- Modems- Modem properties- Diagnostics Modem failed to respond ... Verify interrupt for the port is properly set
Info on screen
port Com1
Interrupt 4
Address 3F8
UART NS 16550AN

I also have PCI Bus mastering enabled.

anyone out there who can give me a hint as to what to do? (apart from deep sixing the compaq :) )

I believe internal modems should be set to use com3. Com1 would work with an external.

You cannot install this type of modem using Add New Hardware (wizard).
You can only install modem using the software/driver supplied with the modem (or a compatible driver package obtained elsewhere.) The modem should have come with driver disk with files and program necessary to install it.

Aloha! Richard.
