TMB Tl Posts: 1 USA | Posted - 4/20/2005 3:51:13 PM I have a Sony Vaio desktop PCVRX860 with a Lucent Technologies Softmodem AMR, driver 3.1.114.0. I am on a slow rural dial-up connection. However, recently I began to notice an alarming drop in my already-abysmal connection speeds and download bandwidth test results from pcpitstop. On really bad days, the connection might say 21 kbps, but download bandwidth tests out at 3 or 4 kbps. On a really good day, I might get 26 or even 44 connect speed, with DL speeds of about 18. At around the same time, I began intermittently getting those error messages of "Connected phone line is not compatible with this modem. Only analog phone lines are supported." I thought the problem was with my phone line. However, today I plugged my son's laptop computer into the exact same phone line that my desktop is plugged into, and it is getting connect speeds of 44 -46, and DL tests at a low of 18 up to a high of 39! So, I'm now wondering if the problem is in my modem. If it is, why is it not consistent? Would getting a different modem be the most logical next step, or is there something else to try? I've already tried running Cablenut, and it might have improved things slightly, but only ever so slightly. |
