Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up a demo where my PC detects an event and initiates a phone call using my external Zoom modem, through the telco, and makes another phone in the lab ring. The problem is that I only have one phone line, so I'm going to simulate the process by just ringing the directly connected phone (i.e., not actually dialing outside the lab, just ringing the phone bell). After looking through modem AT commands I can't seem to find one to just simply ring the bell. Is this possible?

Thank you for your time,

- Matt

No, it's not possible. The bell is rung by the telco sending voltage on the line with all devices on hook.

A number of telcos allow you to 'test' your ring by calling your own number - and when you get a busy signal hang up. The telco then rings the line back automatically.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks Richard, that makes sense. Dialing my own number gets a busy signal but no ring, as expected. I'm not giving up yet though; I'm gonna investigate a little more to see if I can generate that voltage artificially. This is a BSD-based system so I'm thinking of running a PBX using Asterisk, or VoIP, but I don't yet have the slightest idea if these ideas can get me what I want! I still think I'll need two lines to do either of those. Whatever happens, I'll learn something new.

Thanks again,

- Matt
