am trying to connect two computers back to back and did follow instructions on this page http://www.jagshouse.com/modem.html I want to share internet using a RAS server over a distance of 300 metres on a phone wire which i have supplied voltage like instructed on the page above, both machines are winxp, keep on getting error that the "remote machine did not respond/reply" when I enter ATA on the server, am getting "no carrier" error. These modems are not communicating, just what is the right and cheapest way of achieving this. am using two US ROBOTICS 56K 1806

I would try to use something other than modems...!
How many pairs of wires and of what quality is it running between the 2 locations? Network cards?

As for hooking up the modems - there's more to it (as you now see) than supplying line voltage - in fact, not all modems will need that. What is necessary is to get 1 modem to dial without a dial-tone; after entering a dial or answer command, no key/character can be sent to modem until handshake completes and CONNECT is received. Problem in using standard modem-compatible software provided with Windows: since the answer modem doesn't get a ring, it can't answer automatically - how do you get RAS to think a call is coming in?

Aloha! Richard.

Well --- there are modems designed for leased-line operation that will operate on plain/dry wire. That would be easiest.
Then, there are some dial-up modems (few and far between) that were designed with both leased line and dial-up capabilities (The old USR Courier being one);
Finally, it should be possible to do it with the modems you have - whether or not it is practical to do it with the modems you have is another issue as you'd need to figure out a way to address the answer issue.
I'd start by putting both PC's right next to each other where 1 person can access both at the same time, and start with Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port to try and get modems to connect. Once you've figured out how to do that, move on to doing it with RAS and then from a distance....

Phone wire (2 wires / red & green) connected to each modem.
One modem needs
ATA
while the other is given
ATO

You can test with Hyperterminal on each end.
