I've enjoyed cable broadband for a couple of years now, but am moving out in the sticks, where it's not available.

I remember a few things about what helps to create a good dialup connection; V92 modem and updated driver, dedicated phone line cable for computer from telco interface, few as possible A/D conversions (proximity of ISP?).

Taking for granted that these things have'nt changed, what
parameters do I look for in choosing from the multitude of dialup ISP's?

- V.92 standard
- V.44 compression
- PCM upstream
- Remote Access Server type
- I don't need Modem On Hold

Anything else? Any thoughts appreciated.

PCM upstream is basically not happening nor will it happen, so V.92 offers advantage only of Modem-on-hold, and, possibly quicker handshake - although that's unlikely too out in the sticks.....

I'd try Hyperterminal-based connection tests to the various ISPs before choosing one---
