The internal modem on my iBook G4 (running Mac OS 10.3.7) is a Motorola SM56 SoftModem (specifications below).

It works well for surfing the net, however, the speech quality is poor (< 40 dB), it does not provide Caller ID function, also that it only supports the old Fax Class 1 standard. Hence, unfortunately this modem is inadequate for 'Telephony' applications of worth.

Given that it is a 'Soft Modem', I'd be interested to know whether there are any modem software upgrades &/or drivers which might improve the function and performance (speech quality, fax class 2, Caller ID, etc.) of this modem?

Any advice and information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Specifications:
Driver: MotorolaSM56K.kext (v1.2.0)
Hardware Version: Version 1.0
Interface Type: I2S
Country: B5 (United States, Latin America)
Modem Model: Jump
Modulation: V.92

I have a 15" Powerbook with the same problem. I need it to alert me when someone is calling, and it won't. I spent over 2 hours on the phone with Apple support week before last and they could not figure out why it won't work. After much research I found it appears the modem simply does not support this feature. I thought all v.92 modems did. It really stinks, because I bought this computer as a backup only to use when I was out of town on weekends and confined to dial-up. Because I use it at one of my family's homes I need the caller alert feature. I think it sucks that we pay $2000 for a machine with a "virtual" modem.

Does anyone know if this machine (and the iBook mentioned above) can be fitted with an internal modem that supports modem on hold? If not I guess I'm going to have to find an enternal one for the PCI slot. Ugh.

Modem driver is OS-specific.
Modem developers (Motorola in this case) insulate themselves from end users by not selling directly. So, it is up to whomever made arrangements with Motorola to make their modem for the Mac to see that the modem works. (Often, these entities do not have sufficient incentive to make this happen: you've already bought the hardware....)
So, any fix is going to have to come from Motorola via Apple or someone else.....
If they've advertised the system as having a V.92 modem, and the modem does not support MoH, then it is not a V.92 modem.

With respect to voice/telephony apps - that's entirely different - caller id support, good sound quality, fax class 2, etc. are not things that you should expect to find in most modems.

Aloha! Richard.

Yes, perhaps most internal modems being used these days are not expected to offer good speech quality, fax class 2, Caller ID, etc., however, the Apple internal modem of my previous iBook (a 1999 model, 300 MHz PowerPC) provided just such capabilities.

Yeah, I have a 17" Powerbook I bought in January and it's modem supports these features. I just assumed that the 15" version would too. That's what I get for assuming. And I have been unable to locate any external or card modems which advertise this feature.
