I have a Lucent Tech. Soft Modem AMR (came w/computer). I run a DSL line, so I wasn't aware of a problem until just recently when I tried to use the dial up version when DSL was down. I attempted to use "hyperterminal" and got a message that was not getting a dial tone. Device manager tells me that the "device is working properly". I admit, this is not my area, so is this something I can figure out myself or would I be better off taking this to someone else?

First thing to do -
check the modem's connection to phone line - verify that a good line cord is plugged into modem's 'LINE' jack and to a jack that has dial tone when a phone is plugged in to it.
Even better test to the demarc - www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp

Aloha! Richard.

I had a man from the phone company come out and he was outside in the box while I was pluging the phone line in the modem and then unpluging it ... he said that when I plug in the modem it created a short and when I unpluged it all was fine ... meaning the phone cord was good ... the jack was good .... only when it entered the modem did the short occur.
