Hi, I'm back again and I would like to know if this problem is modem, phone line or isp. I'm on dialup using Firefox Browser and any time a page stalls out whilst loading I get disconnected. It's hard to capture exactly what's in my modem log since it refreshes it the moment the popup pops up with the connect to info. I can append to it but the last time I did that it would write web page info to the modem log. I have a Laptop PC and no way of trying another modem so that suggestion is out. Heres the info(not all of it) from the modem log. When I saw that it was fixin to puke on me, I went to where the modem log was and opened it up just prior to it disconnecting and here's what's in it

The modem could be defective.

What I think is happening -
The CD (carrier detect) control signal goes low - so Windows thinks carrier has been lost and remote modem has hung up; but, the remote modem hasn't hung up and carrier has not been lost; so when Windows tries to send commands to the modem, they are not accepted - the modem is still online in data mode.
The CD being dropped could be due to defective modem hardware; could also be due to bad driver or some other conflict in the driver and Windows....

Trying another modem: if laptop has a standard serial (COM) port, you could try an external modem with COM port; or, external USB modem....

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks Richard,
I guess I may give an USB modem a try sometime. Here of late it has been connecting at a pretty decent rate so I may hold out until it pukes on me. I was reading some smartlink info on your site which got me to thinkin and this may be nothing, I read two separate comments and the first one was about audio and the SL tray icon, the other was about losing function of the tray icon after SP2 install. I said all that to say this, when I first got this Laptop it connected every time at 42.6 which is well for my area and with no problems of disconnecting like mentioned above. The one thing that sticks out in my mind now after reading those two SL comments is that my traffic lights never worked and one of the programs in the services was not listed much less enabled. At first I thought the traffic light thing was normal until I decided to update the driver which produced the functional traffic lights. I uninstalled the updated drivers because they only connected at a 26.4 everytime but boy did it connect quick in as little as a few seconds after dialing. So I went back to my old driver and decided to see if I could get the traffic lights to work and I did but don't remember if I enabled the extra service or if it just came as a result of getting the traffic lights to work. To get them to work I had to delete what must have been a dummy icon which was located in the Windows folder, when I did that the traffic lights began to work and lookin back now that's when the trouble with the modem started. Could this just be coincidence or was this by design from my PC provider Averatec to allow the modem to function better with there specific drivers. There support, if you get someone who speaks english is very sincere but sincerely lacking in knowledge(like me) about these things. The best I could get out of them about the traffic lights not working was that they work on some pc's and not on others. And BTW, After updating to SP2 which I thought at the time would fix the traffic lights function but did not, it still just had the non functional icon in the tray as before. Also after updating I had to get rid of SP2 Slink drivers because it rendered my modem useless. I did get the originals back on using a trick you posted on your Slink info site at one time which worked well. I've tried Slinks driver up until the last version(haven't tried 4.20 yet and probably won't) but they all connect at a consistent 24 K which I know is not suppose to mean much, but when downloading something it appears it does to me. At 24 or 26.4 never rises above 2.14kb, but at 42.6 it downloads up to 4.52kb but usually averaging a consistent 4.28kb.
