Another modem by ADDON using the same Intel chip is the same, 28.8. My main PC on the same socket runs at 46.6-48 regularly. I have been told by Maplin that the PC:- Help appreciated. Regards Vic
The CPU won't do any better for the PCI slot. Will have to use a serial port external modem. Help appreciated. Regards Vic

I would suggest trying that modem in the subject PC, and vice-versa - if the Intel modem gets better speed when installed in your main PC then maybe they are telling you the truth; but, if you still get 28.8k...... My friend has a number of spare PC’s of varying antiquity, and has volunteered to do some tests with my 28k modem. He found that the max speed was 33k on one occasion then settled at 28. However he loaned me a Lucent along with the driver disc. The PC recognized this immediately without loading the driver, and dialed out at 48K! Consistently. I have heard that there is incompatibility with some CPU’s in this case a Cyrix 686, and that the suffix MMX is important. Alls well that ends well and I will have to find an equivalent Lucent modem for this build up PC when I return this one to my friend. In the mean time it remains a mystery, as my main PC runs mostly at 46.6. The modem is a HSP 56 micro modem. Regards Gery |
