I have just installed a PCI modem V90/56K by Safecom. Intel chip …536 EP.

It won’t run faster than 28.8k. Another modem by ADDON using the same Intel chip is the same, 28.8.
PC Cyrix 11/330
Max speed setting is 115k

My main PC on the same socket runs at 46.6-48 regularly.
Win ME.

I have been told by Maplin that the PC:-
Cyrix M II / 300 Clock 233 Ram 95
Win ME
That the CPU won't do any better for the PC slot. Will have to use a serial port external modem.
Comments appreciated. Vic

Are there any settings I should look at?

Help appreciated.

Regards Vic

What kind of modem are you running on your main PC?
I would suggest trying that modem in the subject PC, and vice-versa -
if the Intel modem gets better speed when installed in your main PC then maybe they are telling you the truth; but, if you still get 28.8k......

Aloha! Richard.

Thank you Richard.
I don't want to open up my main PC so the tests are done as you suggest by substitution.
My friend has a number of spare PC’s of varying antiquity, and has volunteered to do some tests with my 28k modem. He found that the max speed was 33k on one occasion then settled at 28. However he loaned me a Lucent along with the driver disc. The PC recognized this immediately without loading the driver, and dialed out at 48K! Consistently. I have heard that there is incompatibility with some CPU’s in this case a Cyrix 686, and that the suffix MMX is important. Alls well that ends well and I will have to find an equivalent Lucent modem for this build up PC when I return this one to my friend.
In the mean time it remains a mystery, as my main PC runs mostly at 46.6. The modem is a HSP 56 micro modem.
