Hi. I'm running windows ME on a four year old toshiba laptop. I can use it all day long without problem, but shortly after I connect to dial-up my cursor freezes, the system locks, and all I can do is hard reboot with the power button. The computer has to cool down for ten minutes before it will even reboot at all. I heard that this might be from a damaged modem or even a redialer trojan hidden somewhere. Wouldn't replacing the OS from the "reconfiguration" cd that came with the laptop get rid of any trojan? I've replaced the OS from the disc to no avail. Same problem. Sometimes I can get fifteen minutes online use out of it, but eventually the system locks. The modem is a "toshiba v.90 mini pci modem". If it is a soft modem, can I just replace it with software? I tried replacing the driver already and it didn't help. I really don't want to spend 80 dollars at circuit city for a pcmcia card modem. Any other advice?

If you completely restore the notebook with original Windows installation (wiping out the hard disk and doing a new install) would get rid of any trojan. An re-installation of Windows without wiping out the hard drive might not. But, I don't think there's a high probability that the problem you describe is result of trojan/virus, etc.

Check task manager (CTRL/ALT/DELETE) after you boot up for running processes. (Research what they are by using google/searching for process name/ eliminate unnecessary software/processes. You could also try running the PC in safe mode w/ networking and see how the modem operates.)

I'd see if it's possible to locate a replacement internal modem (E-Bay/etc?) for the notebook. (Either an exact replacement; or, a modem with same physical connection and form factor.)

Aloha! Richard.
