Please help. I run Windows XP SP2, and I have 56K EM3900-U dialup modem. Problem is, if I wait 3-5 minutes or more after bootup to connect, it won't. 'Error 692: Hardware problem' comes up. However, if I try to connect immediately upon booting up, everything is fine. No problems. I can connect, disconnect, connect again, and so on, AS LONG as it's all within three to five minutes of each try. Once the Error message comes up, however, I have to reboot before I can connect again. This means that if I have to disconnect (to save cash), and pass the 3-5 minute deadline before trying to connect again, I have to reboot. Very very inconvenient!! I have tried everything, including checking out all of Microsoft's Error 692 articles. Nothing helps. Can someone please enlighten me? Help!

You have looked at
www.modemsite.com/56k/duns692.asp ?

You have external modem connected to standard COM port?
The modem power must be on when you boot up and remain on;

Suggest you check ability to issue commands to modem when this problem occurs using Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port:
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp
If the modem responds, the problem is in Windows beyond the modem; if modem does not respond, anything is a possibility (Windows/ or the hardware including the COM port on PC and the modem).

Also, check your modem log

Aloha! Richard.

hi richard
yes, i've tried the first two points before -- no go. Haven't come across the last two yet. Will read carefully, give them a try and let you know if anything works. thanks! skarloey
