When using Windows XP Fax program with the subject modem I am unable to send or preview a fax. When I try to preview the fax the following message comes up:

THE FAX PREVIEW CANNOT BE DISPLAYED

Ignoring that message I try to send the fax but nothing happens - there's no record in the Sent or Outbox of the fax software.

Following is the modem log at the time:

Preview fax / send fax may be separate unrelated issues.
Preview should be independent of the modem and may indicate a more basic problem with your Windows/software installation.

The modem .inf file that you have for this modem is 'defective'.
The modem log doesn't show any fax being sent (or if the 1 call that shows was supposed to be a fax, it went out in DATA modem, not fax mode);
The first initialization command for modem (which comes from .inf file):
Send: AT &F E0 S0=0 E1 V1 &D2 &C1 +ER=1 +DR=1 <cr>
is stupid: E0 turns off command echo; E1 turns it on.
Why would anyone write such an initialization? (Answer: they wouldn't);
Microsoft FAX uses TAPI to be modem-independent.
TAPI only works if the modem's .inf file defines the commands/responses of the installed modem. If the .inf file is defective, the modem's operation will be affected. My guess is you have a bad .inf file.... (sloppy work on the part of the OEM/developer)

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks for the response.

If the modem inf file is bad, is there any way to repair or replace it? Also, what is the full name of the inf file you're referring to?

It turns out that knowledge base document you referenced as far as not being able to preview a fax was for SP1, I have SP2. Do you know if there's a similar KB for SP2?

Thanks,

Robert

The .inf file is a text file so it can be edited in notepad, etc. -
The modemlog identifies the .inf file;
Various vendors/driver versions may include an .inf file that works (assuming that is the problem);

The KB article for SP1 - I would assume that Microsoft fixed ( or thinks it fixed) the problem with SP2...

In looking at the modem log it looks like oem28.inf is the file you are referring to. Would it help if I sent a copy of the contents of that file? I looked at it but I have no idea what I'm looking at.

Thanks,

Robert

Sorry - figuring out the .inf file isn't easy -
In terms of getting the problem solved the most cost-effective way, you might be better off trying a different modem.

(The .inf file has lines that define every command and response for the modem so software (MSFax) can use TAPI to control the modem. If you want to pursue problem with current modem, I'd suggest downloading drivers for your modem (from various vendors/versions), and compare the .inf files (relative to FAX commands).

Aloha! Richard.

I have tried another modem without much success. In fact, I bought a modem that had a logo on the box stating it was designed for use with Windows XP but, if anything, I had less success with it than my original modem.

Initially with my original modem when I created a fax to send I was able to preview it - when I installed the other modem (which has since been returned to the store) I couldn't preview the fax and now I am unable to do that with the original modem either.

I wonder if the inf file became contaminated because of the second modem information. I did remove the software for the second modem using add/delete in the control panel.

I'll try to load the drivers again for my original modem and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your help.
