Be gentle; I know not what I do.
I've been told to change my modem speed to 19.2 so that the phone company can more easily check my line. [My phone has been ringing -all by itself, nobody there - while I'm online & throwing me off, & no, I don't have Call Waiting enabled.]
I went to the Control Panel > Phone&Modem Options> Modems>Properties>modem>& adjusted Max Port speed to 19200.
AOL Help told me that I'd also need to change modem settings. They gave me a new modem string which didn't work (they weren't sure it would), & said that if it didn't, I should come here (or somewhere), hold up a sore paw, & look pitiable.
My modem is, apparently, a Conexant HSF V92 56K.
Can anyone advise?
Meow?....

Thanks very much for that Richard, but I wasn't quick enough in getting back to post a Don't Bother. It turns out that the advice was wrong; tests were done without the speed needing to be slowed.
I was advised by the tester to change the phone cord to the computer, & upgrade my modem driver, & then see if the drop-off problem went away. I couldn't get onto Rockwell - the site won't materialise - but I downloaded a generic driver from Conexant.com
It asked to be downloaded into a folder, & sits there even now - I could find no instructions on how to shoehorn said driver into the modem, or glue it on the side, or grind it up & shove it through a port, or... How DOES one use a modem driver? And, while I'm still mewing piteously, is there a site on which I can find the right driver? (Even though someone else has suggested that it may make no difference...)

I'm thinking of having my confusion bronzed. It's been with me a long time.
