I have a GVC 'Free Lancer' Modem Answering Machine, the modem being a Rockwell type, External V.90.K56Flex, Voice,Speakerphone which was designed for all Windows up to Win 98 and Win NT. I have WIN2K and it appears to work, but I've had the odd problem. I can't find anything by searching the actual machine 'model' and (as also noted in this site), found GVC Taiwan had gone; also that the Gentek ftp site exists. How do I identify the driver I need to replace the above mentioned one? Can anyone help please?

You have a full hardware-controller based modem.
Unlike soft (HSP)/ controllerless (DSP) modems, the modem you have will operate *without any driver at all*.
The only thing the 'driver' does is to define for TAPI-compliant apps the modem's command set and responses.
So, if it works, you are OK.

Aloha! Richard.

Aloha! Richard, thank you. That said:

(1) the instructions do specify the Windows versions, which at the time it was bought were up to Win98 and WinNT ( - maybe just 'sales' talk)!

(2) the problems I have had relate to the TAPI, eg after re-booting, I get the error msg 'No Modem', Tapi not working ....' etc. (As at least currently, I don't use the Answering/ Messaging services, it's a pain - re-finding, seting up etc)!

I think - based on your remarks, a new driver MAY fix the problems AND give me the other unctions too of course. If my original question is still valid then, can you help?

Win2k requires the modem to be POWERED ON at the time of bootup in order for it to be recognized properly.

Could it be that you are booting up without the modem powered on?

Go to ControlPanel / Modem Properties / Diagnostics tab -
Query Modem -
what is the modem's response to ati3 ?
This is the firmware version.
You may be able to search for the firmware version number (along with other key words like Rockewell, etc.) to find somewhere on the net a firmware/driver package for the modem. All you would need is the .inf file (no need to flash the modem) from the package....

Aloha! Richard.
