I have an Internal modem for my desktop PC (HPI56SPII) Conexant chipset. The Desktop Pc runs on Windows XP pro, Celeron 2.4 GHZ, 256 DDR. I tried connecting it through a dial up ISP, the speed indicates 33.4 kbps. I also have a laptop with an internal modem (Agere systems AC'97 modem v2136D)I also tried a dial up connection with the same ISP but the speed indicates 53.6 kbps. I then tried installing the same modem on my Pentium 166 MMX, 32RAM (windows 98 SE)It indicates a full 56 kbps. I just want to ask you experts if there is a problem with my internal modem on my desktop;

1. Is it better to use an External Modem to help increase the speed from 33 to 50+ kbps?
2. Are there any possible ways to fix this problem?

Thanks for any help and sugesstins you can give me re this.

Some of the speeds you indicate in the message are not possible.
A modem can connect at 33.6kbps, but not 33.4kpbs;

If you install the Conexant chipset in another machine and get a "full 56kbps" (again, you have not supplied the exact, correct connect speed report) - you probably mean the report shows the port speed not the connect speed due to improper installation or initialization of the modem

Your best bet may be to replace the Conexant modem with a modem based upon the Agere SV92P chipset (which is the same design but for desktop/PCI interfrace as the notebook modem).

Aloha! Richard.

Sounds like the speed isnt being reported properly I had a pctel v.90 that came with my windows 98 system and it would connect at 53.6 but when I upgraded to windows xp I downloaded the drivers and it said it was a v.92 but it connected at 33.4. But the really funny thing was that regardless of what it said it connected at I never noticed any decrease in speed. My downloads still ran around 5k.
