I currently have a dell 8400 with a plain data/fax modem and want to run some software that can answer and play messages, what suggestions on modems on ebay or newegg that are data/fax/voice and also have Caller ID so that I can use this type of software, I heard some have some bad playback sound when playing messages via the phone and others the caller ID dont work, and want to make sure i find one that goes well playing the wave file over the phone? I seen some cheap ones on newegg for under 10 bucks. any advice?

The sound quality depends upon more than the modem card itself - the soundcard/drivers in your machine and other factors come into play, so I don't believe it's possible to know in advance whether a particular modem will have good or acceptable sound quality *in your system*.

CallerID - this is function of hardware design as well as firmware/driver supporting it. If a seller does not disclose whether caller id (type 1) is supported, I don't know how you're going to tell in advance. You can guess.

Aloha! Richard.
