I have a new V.92 Intel 536EP Chipset Modem.

For various reasons I couldn't get this to work properly on either a Win64 or WinMCE machine.

So I put it in my neighbours WinME machine, alongside her own modem. This is on some sort of AMR device wheras mine is a PCI device.

For the first time my modem installed perfectly using the supplied CD.

We both use Wanadoo as our ISP.

In the configure modem options her modem lists speeds up to 921,600. Mine only goes to 115, 200.

Hers will consistently connect at around 49,000. Mine only connects at a max of 31,000 or thereabouts.

I should point out her machine is some 3 years old at least.

Anyone have any clue?

Rob

Just going through a few things and found another weird thing, not related to above, different computer and modem.

If I go to Network connections and then right click on my ISP connection and then hit configure modem there the max speed can be set to 921,600.

However if I go to Device manager and select Modem properties there the list of speeds ends at 115,200.

Again... what gives?

The port speed (115.2k/ 921.6k) is basically irrelevant -
These speeds assume a "real" hardware-based COM port which you do not have with a softmodem. The port speed will not have an any effect on anything.

If your PCI modem is not controllerless, then the port speed will be the maximum rate that the PC talks to the modem. This will be limited by hardware design of modem/COM port.
However, the real limiting factor is the modem-to-modem connect rate, so even in this situation, there is nothing to be gained by having a port speed higher than 115.2kbps.

The connect rate you get with one modem vs another depends upon the modem and its driver or firmware, the phone line/phone network, and the modem you are connecting to.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks Richard,

However I'd still like to know why these discrepencies exist in my second post even though it may be a windows thing.

Re. Your last paragraph...

The phone line/phone network, and the modem you are connecting to are the same in this scenario... so I can rule those out.

That leaves the modem and its driver or firmware.

I would have thought the latest drivers, compared to my neighbours God knows how old, Drivers would be better.

I would also imagine my new modem compared to her 1.5" by 1" AMR type affair would again be better. Firmware wise there is no Updates at the Speedcom (nexsis) site... and again I would think this has the latest firmware.

Could it be something in the .inf file? Is it possible to tweak these at all?

Are some modems perhaps more sensitive to line noise than others?
