What works 'best' on one phone line/network connection/isp may not be best on another combination; Your criteria for 'best' may be different than someone else's criteria. For ISA modems the USR V.Everything was/is the only really quality modem I've encountered. I'd say it's the best, but perhaps I don't know any better. So, just to put some parameters on this, I'm talking about commercially-available equipment in a price range for middle-class American citizens. That should be obvious, given the equipment mentioned on this forum. Additionally, if one is talking "best", it only makes sense to infer that what one means are things like 1) connects best, 2) maintains connections best, 3) adapts to line conditions best, 4) consumes host PC CPU cycles least, and 5) in general, operates best. Now if I look over all of the ISA modems I know of, none, including USR's other modems, can claim all 5 of those, except the V.Everything. And I think it's fair to ask if a PCI analog to it exists. Of course, we would like to know why masta is dissatisfied with the USR Performance Pro. He/she doesn't really give us anything to go by, except dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, in the land of modems, dissatisfaction tends to run in repeating patterns: unreliable initial negotiations, dropped connections, lots of CPU-cycles used, etc. Of course, there is an analog to the V.Everything modem in the Courier 56K V.92 Business Modem. One would imagine that's the successor product and in fact, it is V.Everything and V.Everywhere! (What a deal!!) I realize it is outside masta's price range and it is external. There does not seem to be an analogous board product anymore. Strange. Nevertheless, things have been strange at USR for quite a while, it seems, just judging as an outside observer. |
